Elgeyo Marakwet County senator Kipchumba Murkomen has urged people living in the Kerio Valley escapement including in West Pokot to vacate their areas of residence.
Murkomen's call comes after a landslide hit West Pokot county on Saturday resulting in a tragedy that has left approximately 50 people dead.
In a video that the Majority leader in the senate shared on Twitter on Monday, he advised the residents against resisting evacuation. The senator further acknowledged that the residents may not have camps or places to move to.
"I have one request to ask from you my people, let us not refuse to move from the highlands. That is my real request. I beg all of you, and I know right now you do not have places to go to, but let as agree that we can all leave the high grounds and come to the lower grounds.
(Naomba tu kitu moja watu yangu, tusikatalie hiyo milima, tusikwamie huko. That is my real request. Naomba nyinyi wote, na najua pengine hata hamna shamba ya kuenda saa hii, hamna mahali pa kuenda lakini tukubalie we can all leave the high grounds tukuje lower grounds here)," Murkomen said.
This comes after a series of visits by leaders to the landslide tragedy hit area that has so far crippled business and travel.
Murkomen further noted that the meteorological department has warned that the rain is set to continue for a while thus called out on the residents of West Pokot to be safe than sorry.
According to Murkomen, it will be easier for the government to help with evacuation if the residents cooperated.
