Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi on Sunday urged those fronting referendum to ensure it is for the interest of the common citizens.
Speaking at Metro Church in Nakuru East, the ANC leader said Kenyans are burdened with the harsh economic times hence any amendments to the Constitution should be people centered.
“It is clear that Kenyans are fed up hence need for referendum but the push for referendum should be for the interests of the ordinary Kenyans who are feeling the pain,” Mudavadi said.
He faulted Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuro Aukot’s Bill that seeks to reduce the number of parliamentarians.
According to Mudavadi, such a move will inconvenience service delivery to the citizens. He was, however, quick to point out that Kenyans will have the last say on the issue, on whether to allow reduction or not.
The ANC party leader who was accompanied by Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Joel Maina Kairu and MCAs Peter Mbae (Kabazi) and Wilbur Onyango (Kivumbini) reiterated that Kenyans are indeed burdened with harsh economy.
He attributed some of the challenges the country is facing to poor implementation of the new constitution.
While noting that the counties were suffering with no resources being channeled down from the National government, Mudavadi wondered why health was devolved yet matters of procurement still remain with the National government.
“Some of the challenges we are facing are due to the fact that we have failed to fully implement the new constitution. For instance we have health devolved but then the procurement still remains with National government” he said.
