Dr Hillary Barchok was on Tuesday officially sworn into office as Bomet Governor following the demise of Dr Joyce Laboso.
The incoming governor has now been asked to name a female Deputy Governor as he positions himself to start delivering on the promises they made to the people of Bomet when seeking re-election.
The Council of Governors has also asked Dr Barchok to name a Deputy Governor as soon as possible while rooting for female leaders to be chosen for the post.
The governors made the request through Narok Governor Samuel Ole Tunai.
“It is the wish and request of the council that you pick a female deputy in honour of the late Governor Laboso, and also to support and push for gender parity in the country,” read the message, as quoted by Standard.
The swearing-in of the governor came after Laboso succumbed to cancer which she has been battling for 28 years.
Several leaders attended the function including Deputy President William Ruto, governors Stanley Kiptis (Baringo), Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Paul Chepkwony (Kericho).
Female leaders from different parts of the country have also weighed in on the matter while pleading with Barchok to remember them during the appointment of a deputy governor.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has also asked Barchok to reserve the slot for women leaders following his take over.
