A Kisii County enforcement officer on Friday evening was arrested by detectives for impersonating as a NEMA official for days.
Mr Lucas Nyarero was arrested by detectives in possession of Sh120, which he had allegedly collected from unsuspecting trader in exchange of a license.
The NEMA inspection officer Shien Koiyiet told reporters that traders have been complaining, forcing his team to make follow-ups on the matter for action.
"We came here with a team from Nairobi. We investigated and came across a resident who they had given fake environmental impact assessment license and another who had given him one hundred and twenty shillings for affluents discharge license," said Koiyiet.
"Through that, we have arrested one suspect Lukas Nyareru who is also working with county government of Kisii as an enforcement officer," he added.
According to Koiyiet, cases of people impersonating Nema officials have become rampant in Kisii and Nyamira Counties, with traders losing millions to imposters.
He asked traders to be vigilant, adding that NEMA does not move around streets threatening traders without proper procedure as per the law.
"These cases have become common in Kisii and Nyamira but we will deal with them. For this case, we are going to charge him with three counts.
"Impersonating NEMA officers, forging NEMA documents and obtaining Money by false pretense," he said, adding that traders should report such cases.
The suspect will spend his weekend behind bars at Kisii Central Police station until Monday when he will be arraigned in court.
