Emerging details indicate that some Kenyan firms have been selling out their contracts to Chinese companies after securing them from the government.
This has been confirmed by the President's Delivery Unit (PDU), which terms this the reason why Chinese firms are the ones seen doing the majority of construction jobs.
PDU Delivery Expert Polycurp Onyango says that the Chinese are no longer bidding for tenders, but buy the contracts from Kenyans and let them chase after the next one, which they buy again.
"I will use an example; a contract worth Sh10 billion, Chinese will come and but that thing for Sh8 billion, then the Kenyan keeps Sh2 billion, starts chasing the next contract. So tense contracts are actually won by locals. Its just that our Kenyan locals are peculiar," he said.
He spoke at the Kenya Association of Manufacturers headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday evening.
This is as he the government from claims of preferring Chinese contractors over local ones, given that Chinese firms are dominating construction works across the country currently.
He said that the Chinese no longer participate in tenders.
"You know these Kenyans are unique. These Chinese you see here no longer participate in tenders. I don't know if you know that. Immediately a Kenyan wins that contract, the Chinese comes," he added.
This comes at a time when Kenya owes the Chinese Sh654.7 billion in unpaid debts.
