One person died on Friday morning and several others sustained serious injuries after a police Landcruiser ferrying prisoners overturned at Kiunduani area along Nairobi-Mombasa road.

Makindu sub-county traffic commandant James Rusungu confirmed the accident. He told journalists that the vehicle heading to Makindu law courts burst one of its tyres, thus rolling several times.

"There was an accident at Kiunduani involving a police motor vehicle belonging to Mtito Andei police station which was ferrying prisoners to Makindu law courts. On arriving at the scene it burst a tyre and rolled," said Rusungu.

He said that the person who died on the spot was a female prisoner stating that the vehicle was carrying ten prisoners and four police officers.

Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed for treatment at Makindu sub-county hospital.

"One prisoner, a woman died on the spot while the injured were rescued by good Samaritans and rushed for treatment at Makindu hospital," He said.

He stated that investigations into the incident has commenced.

By the time of reporting the vehicle had not been towed from the scene.
