A number of wealthy politicians from the Rift Valley region are plotting an alliance aimed at giving area voters an alternative, it has emerged.
The group which consists persons initially allied to Deputy President William Ruto, has hinted at giving him a tough time ahead, with the plan being to counter him.
They include Uasin Gishu politician Bundotich Zedekiah and Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) boss and former Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto, who are already both in CCM.
The others include David Langat, Joshua Kulei and former Interior Security Permanent Secretary Zakayo Cheuiyot, all of whom have a bone to pick with the DP, hence the plot.
While others have accused Ruto of using his position to snatch billions woth of tenders from them, Rutto and Bundotich are accusing him of engineering their gubernatorial losses in 2017.
Consequently, they have resolved to come together in a bid to scuttle his 2022 presidential bid, according to a confidant of Mr Langat.
He added that the union will include KANU party's Gideon Moi (Baringo Senator), another sworn rival of Ruto.
“We are working on a strategy where CCM and Kanu are going to work together before joining a larger alliance that will have a better chance of forming the next government," He told the Sunday Nation.
Cheruiyot, a former Kuresoi South MP hopeful who fell out with the DP ahead of the 2017 polls confirmed the claims, saying that the region deserves an alternative political route.
“The Kalenjins, just like other Kenyans, have the freedom of thought and association. I do not believe in being pigeonholed for the sake of an individual’s ambition, especially a megalomaniac. Such does not solve community issues,” he said.
Rutto confirmed that the group has joined him in CCM, but the DP has been appearing less concerned about the grouping.
“They are already there and many others are coming. This party is not a party of sycophants. It is a party of people who want to be free to think. We harness all the intellectual capacities of everyone and in particular, those who are very interested in the greatest good for the greatest numbers,” he said.
