A court-ordered Mr Trump to pay the money to 8 charities, accusing his of self-dealing and using charity funds for his presidential campaign.

Former US attorney general Barbara Underwood conducted an investigation that revealed what she described as a shocking pattern of illegality.

The president admitted to the charges that had been pressed against him including using the charity funds to settle the legal obligations of his companies.

New York attorney general Letitia James welcomed the development, saying that the funds would finally go to those who deserve them.

He confirmed that the money had been wired to the charity accounts as ordered by a court.

"Charities are not a means to an end, which is why these damages speak to the president's abuse of power and represent a victory for not-for-profits that follow the law, " he said.

"Funds have finally gone where they deserve — to eight credible charities. My office will continue to fight for accountability because no one is above the law — not a businessman, not a candidate for office, and not even the president of the United States, " he added.
