Appearing before Nyeri Senior Resident Magistrate Faith Mugongo, Mr Samuel Mwai said he has been smoking bhang to enable him survive in his toilet cleaning job.

The man whose work is unclogging toilets said the stench that emanates from the toilets makes his job unbearable, forcing him to smoke the illegal drug for survival.

“I unclog toilets for a living and the smell is too much. I need to smoke a joint so that I can be able to work and make some money,” he said, driving the court into laughter.

This is as he admitted claims that he was found with 12 rolls of bhang in his home in Kamakwa, Nyeri at 9pm on October 12, by police officers from the Kamakwa police post.

The court heard that the man was arrested by police acting on information from the public, and upon searching him, recovered the rolls with a street value of Sh240.

Mwai said he has been smoking bhang since 1976 and it has never affected him in any way, while pleading guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate set October 22 as the date the case will proceed, pending the presentation of the probation report before the court.
