Residents of Lemook in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County on Friday demonstrated over discrimination and nepotism in the recruitment of census jobs.
They said it's sad that despite youths from the region being shortlisted, the vacancies were given to strangers.
“The recruitment lacked transparency and locked out a suitable candidate from the sub-county. Surely, does it mean that we don’t have learned people in the region?” asked Jonathan Maritim.
They vowed to ensure that no census is carried out unless youths from the area get the job.
The residents vowed to disrupt the ongoing training for the officials who will carry out census until their problems are solved.
“In over ten villages, not even a single person was selected, we have, therefore, decided that no one will be counted in the coming census and we will not open our doors for the exercise because we don’t know them,” added Mike Kemei.
“We read malice in the process since it was not transparent and people were not selected on merit but through corruption that’s why residents were not selected because they lack money,” Samuel Koech noted.
The 2019 Population and Housing Census which will start from the night of August 24, 2019, and continue up to August 30, 2019.
