In 1960s ODM leader Raila Odinga made a memorable group to Eastern Europe at the peak of the famous cold war, he recalled on Friday at Nyaribari Masaba.
Young and energetic, Mr Odinga had been instructed by his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, to visit his elder brother Dr Oburu Oginga, who was studying in USSR.
At Moscow, Mr Odinga was ushered in by tough cold weather, the annoying winter that had just only started. He was used to warm Nairobi weather.
It's during this famous trip that Mr Odinga met Dr Hezron Manduku, then studying with Dr Oginga, and the two forged a strong relationship thereafter.
"I visited Moscow where my brother Oburu was studying. The weather was terrible and Dr Oburu had to give me new cloths to cope with it," he recalled.
"It's during this terrible trip of my life I first met Dr Manduku. He was introduced to me by Dr Oginga who was his study mate in Russia," he added.
Later, the opposition leader was enrolled at a Germany college in Western Europe where he did his engineering course that enabled him to teach university of Nairobi.
His connection with Dr Manduku in Europe would later blossom in Nairobi when the latter started working at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Dr Manduku died three weeks ago after a long illness and was laid to rest on Friday in a function that was attended by several leaders from across the country.
