An elderly woman who owns the Tasia building that collapsed last week killing ten people and leaving 21 others displaced has not yet been arrested.
The woman popularly known as Mama Kanyoni or Njoki among the Embakasi residents is said to be associating with 'powerful people' as indicated by confidential police source.
“The woman who owns this building and tens of others in the city is well known to the high and mighty. There is no office in this land which she doesn’t enter.
Embakasi police boss Ochieng Mangira said that the matter was complicated and it required a lot of time for investigations to be completed.
“This was a complex matter. Lots of investigations need to be done. The matter is being investigated by a multi-agency [team] comprising the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Nema, National Construction Authority, among others,” Mangira said on Wednesday.
He further stated that after the completion of the investigations, the people who erected the building including the architect(s) will be questioned since The National Construction Authority have the standards of buildings.
Mangira also said that those that were left homeless were settled at Tassia Catholic Church and they are receiving help from Red Cross Society and well-wishers.
He added that no reports of missing persons was filed and advised that people who are missing should be reported to the police immediately.
