Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has led county and national transport ministry officials in launching an express highway linking Nairobi and Mombasa.

In a post in his official Facebook page, Sonko noted that the construction of the toll road would improve transport and connectivity between Mombasa and Nairobi.

The city boss further opined that it would enhance the road travel speed between the two cities through reduction of time of travel from ten to about four hours.

"The upgraded Nairobi-Mombasa toll road is intended to facilitate faster transit and improved connectivity between Nairobi and Mombasa.It is expected to reduce travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa from ten hours to just four hours," read part of the post.

Furthermore, Sonko asserted that the overall cost of transport and incidences of road accidents would reduce significantly.

"The dual carriageway will reduce logistic costs and address road way safety between the cities," noted Sonko.

According to the vocal governor, the advancement of infrastructure along Nairobi and Mombasa route could spur economic growth in the areas lying along the highway.

He further observed that the elevated standards of transport occasioned by improved road network between the coast and the upcountry as well as other East African countries, coupled with the Standard Gauge Railway, which is under construction, would accelerate development in the region
