A family in Kapsita village is demanding justice after their son died while in police custody in Molo, Nakuru County.
The family of Onesmas Manyara wants police officers at Molo police station to explain circumstances that led to his death.
Manyara was arrested and booked at the police station on July 18, 2019 on accusation that he allegedly stole his employer’s car battery.
The 27-year-old was beaten by his employer and dropped at the police station by his employer in a critical state.
Molo police commander Isaac Odumbe who confirmed the incident said Manyara died of severe injuries inflicted by his employer.
Odumbe said they rushed Manyara to the hospital to seek treatment due to the injuries he sustained following the beating.
“The deceased died while being driven to hospital. He was in a critical state,” said the police commander as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.
According to standardmedia.co.ke, Odumbe in a statement had earlier said they were waiting for a postmortem report to ascertain the cause of death since Manyara did not have any visible injuries.
Manyara’s mother Sophia Kwamboka said following his son’s arrest she tried to see him at the station but was sent away by police officers.
The next day, on Friday, Kwamboka said she went to search for her son at Molo hospital and was shocked to find Manyara’s body in the morgue.
According to a morgue attendant, Manyara’s body was booked in by the police at around 8.30am on Friday.
Kwamboka who wants justice for his son said the officers at the station have not told her what transpired following the arrest of her son despite her reporting the incident at Molo police station.
