Renowned activist John Githongo has hailed former auditor general Edward Ouko as an incorruptible public servant.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the former journalis said that Mr Ouko has left behind a legacy.

"For those who doubt there are clean, competent men and women in this government, there goes Edward Ouko who went in clean and competent and leaves as he came with head head high. Hongera!" He wrote on Twitter.

The tweet came after the term of the former government's chief accountant elapsed on Monday, rendering the auditor general's position vacant.

Edward Ouko recounted his stormy tenure to members of the press on Tuesday, saying that his job was a hugely challenging one.

He survived an attempt to oust him after the then Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko threw away a file authored by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) that wanted him charged.

The former auditor general had to contend with a hostile parliament that failed to defend him when was facing the prospect of an ouster.

President Uhuru Kenyatta moved swiftly to find a replacement to Edward Ouko.

Stephen Masha has been appointed by the president to take over albeit in an acting capacity.

Dr Edward Ouko found himself in the cross-hairs of the high and mighty after shining a spotlight on the misuse of public funds.
