Gonorrhea is one of the sexually transmitted diseases that affect both men and women. It is commonly spread through having unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person although it can be passed to a baby during childbirth if the mother is infected.
It is important to note that gonorrhea cannot be transmitted through kissing, hugging, shaking hands, sharing food and drinks, sneezing or even coughing.
Most people do not know whether they are infected since this infection does not have significant symptoms.
The signs and symptoms of gonorrhea in women mostly affect the genital tract and they include.
1. Abdominal or pelvic pain
Untreated gonorrhea results in the inflammation of the fallopian tube and also the ovaries resulting in severe pelvic pain. This can lead to difficulties in getting pregnant or even increased infertility rate due to tubal obstruction or damage.
2. Painful urination
Gonorrhea results in frequent urination in women. Those infected also tend to experience pain when peeing. This is due to the presence of sores in the genital and urinary tract that come into contact with the urine.
3. Increased vaginal discharge
Gonorrhea in women can be spotted by having increased and abnormal vaginal discharge with a greenish colour and abnormal odor. This discharge can range from watery to being creamy which is different from the normal discharge.
