The religious ‘industry’ has always been mired with controversy. Unlike tangible brands, its popularity has never waned. It glows and will continue to glow until the last man – a highly unlikely scenario – drops dead.
It is not that religion, which I think is a belief in a supreme being, was not present in the African traditional setup. There were gods which our forefathers prayed to before being vanquished by newer gods, backed by a centuries-old books containing the new god’s instructions.
We’ve witnessed scenes and actions that make us wonder why people still troop to certain churches. There have been whippings, slaps, and even fake miracles, yet religion still marches on unbowed. The belief in a supreme being can be attributed to the following:
1.The question of our origin
The ever nagging question in a man’s life is the origin of the first man. African traditional set up had its own creation myths, just as does the bible. The bible settles the question by claiming that God created man in His own image. With that, the Christian is assured, lending credence to religion.
2.The fear of life after death
Perhaps this is the vital element that glues religion in people’s minds and cements it as part and parcel of their lives. Where does man go after he stops breathing? During funerals, people exhort the gods to ensure a safe passage to heaven for a loved one, or even consider them in the event they were not Christians. Despite the allure of heaven, still, nobody wants to die, as it remains to be the only way to heaven.
3.A belief that a supernatural being is in control
A calm surrender deep in the midst of trouble or challenging situations marks a believers life. When struck by tragedy, people are quick to pray. When in need of money, people pray to a supreme being, seeking for a way out. As such, religion gives people strength in times of adversity, knowing that there is a supreme being who will ensure they get through or has a valid reason why they are going through difficult times.
