Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has been handed a major reprieve after the Jubilee Party declared her the substantive holder of the position.
On Wednesday, the Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju read the riot act to the Members of the County Assembly and urged them to support her as she resumes office after staying away for a year.
The MCAs had blocked her return into office even after the court ordered her reinstatement. Tuju said that the party had agreed to see her return so that the county assembly can continue delivering on its mandate.
“We have agreed on three key issues. We took the MCAs through the party constitution and rules. The status quo remains and Elachi is the substantive speaker,” said Tuju, as quoted by Standard.
The declaration means Majority Leader Abdi Guyo will continue serving in his current capacity. Tuju said that he intends to call for a consultative meeting with the MCAs to chart the way forward after they fell out with Elachi.
He also reminded them of the displeasure of working with their colleagues from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Tuju reiterated that the MCAs had promised to support Elachi as she resumes office after being away for a long period.
