Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) main campus was on Monday morning closed indefinitely after students staged an unpeaceful demonstration outside the Juja based institution.
In a memo posted on the university's Twitter handle on Monday morning, the senate resolved to indefinitely shut down the institution and asked the students to vacate the university by 11: 30 Am.
"In a special meeting of Senate held today, Monday 11th November 2019 at 10.00 AM, it was resolved that the university closes until further notice," read part of the Memo.
The rioting students who engaged Juja Police Station officers in running battles decried increased cases of insecurity within the university which has left more students injured and robbed by thugs.
In another memo issued out by Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA) on Sunday, the Association invited the students for a meeting on Monday which consequently led to the demonstration.
"We call upon all the students to show up tomorrow, Monday at 9:30 AM outside gate B to evoke a fundamental right of expression through a peaceful demonstration and picketing and present our petition to the relevant authorities," read the memo.
JKUAT joins other top institutions of higher learning in the country whose normal operations have been paralyzed as a result of students' riots. Moi University, Pwani University and Kenyatta University were recently closed indefinitely after students took to the streets in efforts to present their grievances to the relevant authorities.
