Deputy President William Ruto has been warned against thinking he can penetrate the Mt Kenya voting block using his allies from the region.
The DP has so far managed to woo a good number of area lawmakers, some of whom have repeatedly and openly been endorsing his 2022 presidential bid ahead of time.
However, a group of youths from Murang'a County on Monday pointed out that he can only go through President Uhuru Kenyatta and not any other person.
The group spoke in a press conference in Kenol Town, after clashing with another one allied to Kandara MP Alice Wahome, one of the staunch supporters of the DP.
“It should go on record that if Deputy President William Ruto is interested in Mt Kenya region votes, he should go through the President. The President remains a darling to the residents in the region,” said their leader Alex Mbote.
The group had clashed with the other led by Kandara Youth Leader Laban Thuo which had organized the presser to defend Wahome from attacks being fired at her by Uhuru's supporters.
The declaration comes at a time when the President seems reluctant to reassure the DP of his 2013 and 2017 promise to endorse him as his successor in the 2022 polls.
Instead, Uhuru and Ruto have been seen to drift apart, with the president now appearing more closer to ODM leader and Ruto's sworn rival Raila Odinga, whom he reconciled with in 2018.
However, the DP has made it clear that he will not be laying back to await anyone's endorsement or automatic backing in 2022, but will work his way into the hearts of the voters.
