Confirming the death, Oneko’s son, Dick Oneko said their mother was discharged from the hospital a week ago.

“She was discharged after doctors informed us that she well and we travelled back home. She even had a walk in the morning before she passed on,” said the young Oneko.

Oneko said their mother suffered from a mild stroke and they have been managing her condition.

“It is a big blow to the family but we take it as God’s plan. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” said Oneko.

But for the former broadcasting minister Achieng' Oneko, marrying an aunt and get niece was not a big deal those days.

During her childhood, Anyango stayed with her aunt Jedidiah Achieng', who was Achieng'Oneko's  first wife.

The freedom fighter, who served as Nakuru Town MP in 60s, would later marry his wife's niece, with little opposition.

“Those days, it was easy for a woman to share her husband with her niece. That is why Mzee married me and I never regretted,” she said.

Jedidah Achieng' died in 1992, at the time Oneko was elected Rarieda MP on Ford Kenya party ticket, serving until 1997.

Mr Oneko was a close ally of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. He resigned from goverment in 1966 when Oginga quit. The two formed KPU which was banned in 1969.
