A woman was on Thursday charged before a Nyeri Court for obtaining money fraudulently from bodaboda riders.
Jane Wangui Mwangi was accused of allegedly receiving money fraudulently from Charles Ndegwa after promising to take the bodaboda riders to see Deputy President William Ruto.
The court, according to Kenya News Agency heard that the accused person received Sh100,000 from Ndegwa which was contributed by bodaboda riders from Nyeri to enable Wangui to secure the visit.
Nyeri Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo heard that the accused person committed the offence on December 28, 2019, by falsely pretending that she was in a position to secure the visit for the riders to DP Ruto’s home for the end-of-year party.
Nyeri Central Sub County Police Commander Paul Kuria said they have arrested two men and two women said to be working with the accused to con unsuspecting locals.
The bodaboda riders had each paid Sh1,000 to the county chairman, Ndegwa for the visit and branded t-shirts and hats.
“They contributed money and sent to an unknown person in Nairobi whom we are yet to identify. They did not have a documented order to go where they claim they wanted to visit,” said Kuria.
The accused person has however denied the charges before the court and asked to be released on bail.
Kagendo ordered that she be released on a bond of Sh5,000,000 with a surety of similar amount.
The case will be mentioned on January 13, 2020.
