The Council of Governors (COG) has announced that it will push for key constitutional reforms in the coming days as the shareable revenue standoff continues.
Speaking on Thursday to members of the press, the chairman of the COG, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said that the reforms would be proposed with the express view of protecting the gains made under the devolved system of governance.
"In order to safeguard the spirit and the letter of devolution, the council intends to propose key constitutional reforms that are paramount in enhancing the unity of the nation called Kenya," Governor Oparanya said.
"In this regard, the Council of Governors seeks to spearhead its own initiative called the Ugatuzi Initiative, " he added.
The announcement comes amid debate on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and the Punguza Mizigo Initiative, two initiatives that have divided public opinion.
It also comes in the context of a revenue allocation impasse that has seen the Senate and the National Assembly fail to reach a compromise.
Governors contend that the amount allocated to the 47 counties is not enough and have called for an increase but the national government insists that it does not have enough money to meet the demands for an increase.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has pleaded with county bosses to accept what has been allocated to them in the meantime.
