Detectives from the office of the Director of Criminal Investigations on Friday impounded two vehicles with more than 600 empty gas cylinders set to be refilled with counterfeit gas.
The sleuths arrested one suspect at Swift Gas Refilling Plant at Syokimau along Mombasa Road following an operation. The team was led by flying squad officers as it made its way to the plant. The arrested suspect has been identified as Zein Salimi and is believed to be the owner of the plant.
"AN ASSORTMENT of Gas Cylinders believed to have been set for refilling with counterfeit Gas were earlier today confiscated at Swift Gas Refilling Plant at #Syokimau along Mombasa Rd by a Multi-Agency Team led by @DCI_Kenya Flying Squad Detectives in an anti-counterfeit operation, " DCI said.
During the crackdown, police nabbed a Mitsubishi Lorry and Toyota Caldina whose registration numbers are KCB 597S and KBG 141V respectively
"One suspect; Zein SALIMINI (owner of the Plant) was arrested, while two Motor Vehicles; a Lorry make Mitsubishi of Registration No. KCB 597S & a Toyota Caldina Registration No. KBG 141V both carrying approximately 600 empty cylinders of different brands and companies were seized," DCI added.
The police are holding the suspect as they dig deeper into the matter.
"The suspect remains in lawful custody as the seized Cylinders are kept as Exhibits," DCI said.
