Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has opined that former footballer McDonald Mariga doesn’t deserve to be cleared to run for the Kibra parliamentary by-election.
In a tweet, Kipkorir claimed that Mariga is not a registered voter despite the fact that he is aged between 28 and 40.
He also argued that the football star has two different birthdays, which makes it unclear when he was born.
The outspoken lawyer further claimed that Mariga unlawfully registered as a voter, adding that his candidature is disrespectful to the people of Kibra.
“Mariga should be barred in Kibra by-elections: one who has different birthdays for different purposes lacks Integrity, though between 28 & 40, has never registered as a voter, his purported voter registration is unlawful and his candidature is contemptuous of Kibra people,” he tweeted on Thursday.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) locked out Mariga from the contest because his name doesn't appear in the 2017 voters' register.
The move has elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans, with members of the Jubilee party vowing to appeal IEBC's decision.
On his part, Mariga has dismissed claims that he is being sponsored by Deputy President William Ruto, noting that he decided to contest for the position because he wanted to serve the people of Kibra.
