Angry residents of Ikonge in Nyamira County could not take it lightly after a man attacked an employee of Kenya Women Finance Trust Bank with a panga and killed him.
Confirming the Tuesday evening incident, Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba said the man identified as Mayaka had earlier killed the bank employee identified only as Eric.
"Mayaka disappeared into a nearby bush after killing Eric. Angry members of the public chased after him, apprehended him and beat him mercilessly and killed him," said Mariba.
The commissioner regretted that residents instead surrendering the suspect to police officers for court processing opted to take the law into their hands.
He appealed to locals to solve their differences amicably instead of making bad decisions to kill one another.
"I want to remind residents of Nyamira County that everyone is protected by the law. I, therefore, urge locals to stop taking the law into their hands. Mayaka could have been surrendered to the police instead of being killed," he stated.
Mariba further said residents should stop borrowing loans from banks which they will be unable to repay.
The commissioner said the body of Mayaka was moved to Nyamira hospital morgue.
