Ngira Karisa Charo on Tuesday before the court recanted his statement in the murder of businessman Issack Kassim Sorow in Kilifi.

The accused was found guilty and sentenced to serve eight years in prison after he entered a plea-bargain agreement with the State that saw him become a prosecution witness.

Standardmedia.co.ke reports that Ngira was supposed to be a prosecution witness against two of his co-accused who were facing similar charges of killing the businessman.

Ngira before entering an agreement was being charged alongside Eddlied Mandi Jilani, a driver for Kilifi County Government, and Makonde Ruwa with the murder of Sorow, a crime committed on March 8, last year.

Ngira in his testimony claimed that he was hired by Jilani to kill Sorow and he, Ngira together with Ruwa, strangled him to death.

Ngira has however recanted his statement and told the court that he was forced to record a false statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He said he agreed to plead guilty to the murder charge in return for a lenient sentence where he would be jailed for just four years and also if he testified against his co-accused.

The office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said they will ask the Mombasa High Court to set aside Ngira’s conviction.
