Former Makadara lawmaker Benson Mutura has alerted the nation to prepare for more constitutional amendment pushes, claiming that another proposal is in the making.

The Jubilee member says that church leaders are already in the process of tabling another referendum bid, at a time when the nation is already having two such proposals.

Speaking on Saturday, Mutura claimed that the clergy are already in the process of collecting the required 1 million signatures to realize the bid, claims that are, however, yet to be proven.

"Viongozi wa makanisa pia wanataka referendum yao. Wanasanya signatures za wakristo (the clergy are also pushing for their own referendum and are collecting signatures from Christians)," he said.

He made the remarks on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show, also attended by former Makadara MP hopeful Brian Weke and nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura.

However, said Mutura, none of the ongoing referendum pushes will pay off, noting that there will be no referendum before the 2022 general elections, and laughing off the ongoing pushes.

He based his argument on the poor constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which only has three commissioners after four resigned.

He said that the approval of the Punguza Mizigo bill will most likely be challenged in court as the IEBC lacks the infrastructure to verify the 1.2 million signatures it approved on Thursday.

"Hakuna referendum itafanyika. Signature walikuwa wanaverify kutoka wapi na hawana databank. Hii itapelekwa Supreme Court for interpretation," he said.

This translates to; "No referendum will take place. How did they (IEBC) verify signatures yet they lack a databank. This will be taken to the Supreme Court for interpretation."

On the other hand is the proposal to expand the executive arm of government, under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
