In an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday morning, Wanga argued that the bishops communicated the reason behind their decision clearly to the public.

The vocal lawmaker noted that the bishops had asserted that politicians and some members of the public had turned churches into places where they dump proceeds of corruption.

"They were very clear. They said, first of all...there has been a lot of talk about the church being used to launder money," said Wanga.

According to the vocal MP, one should just give a tenth of his or her income to the church as a tithe.

Wanga, who is a close ally of ODM Party leader Raila Odinga further accused some individuals of taking money from questionable sources to houses of worship in the pretext of offering assistance to the churches.

"We are using the church stage to launder money...to bring money which we cannot explain," she said.

She expressed her support for the new regulations introduced by the Catholic Church, arguing that the move will reduce cases of money laundering and individuals donating questionably large sums of money from inexplicable sources.

This comes after the Catholic Church banned cash donations exceeding Sh50,000.

"Henceforth, fundraisers in the church will be done by mobile money transfer or by cheque. This will avoid handling of huge amounts of cash and give a clear trail of the donors," said Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) chair Bishop Philip Anyolo.
