Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has come out to lash at governors for failing to pay their creditors. He has asked them to pay up and stop politicizing the issue.
For the better part of the week, some County's were put on the spot over debts. The counties have struggled to pay pending bills in recent months, leading to persistent clash with the treasury.
On Wednesday, a furious Matiang'i warned governors about delaying of paying money owned to Small and Medium Enterprises, adding that he will be forced to descend on them.
"It will be a requirement that county governments provide a monthly status report that will include an itemized list of all the bills paid," he said.
"Going forward all county governments are advised that subsequent disbursement to county governments shall be based on the progress made in the settlement on the pending bills," Matiang'i said.
Already 12 counties have cleared the bills. They are Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kericho, Kilifi, Kwale, Laikipia, Makueni, Nyamira Nyandarua, Nyeri Uasin Gishu and Baringo counties.
Present at the press conference were CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge, the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakango and several CSs.
Treasury had refused to disburse money to counties yet to clear pending bills, a move that irked Council of Governors.
Early this week, CoG chairman Wycliffe Oparanya warned that the council will not allow National Government to dictate payments of bills will are not approved.
