In a desperate bid to ensure he beats the Friday deadline to join Form One, a boy in Trans Nzoia County has resorted to selling one of his kidneys so as to raise school fees.
Isaiah Wanjala from Gidea village in Kwanza constituency scored 394 marks in last year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.
He was selected to join Chewoyet Boys High School, a national school in West Pokot County.
Despite securing a slot at the national school, Wanjala has one headache, his elderly parents cannot raise Sh50,000 needed for him to start his secondary education.
"My aged parents are not in a position to raise my school fees as well as provide the basic needs for my younger brothers and sister," he said at his parents home on Wednesday.
The student notes that the parents have tried all possible avenues to raise the cash needed but all has been in vain.
The only remaining option for him is to sell a kidney.
With the complications that the process is likely to expose him to, Wanjala said he is prepared to go through all the medical procedures as long as it will raise funds for his high school and university fees.
The decision has given his parents, Rose Andisi and Fred Wanyonyi, sleepless nights.
They are now appealing to well-wishers and people with Goodwill to come to their rescue.
"As a family we are worried by his decision, we have tried to persuade him otherwise but he is adamant and determined to join his dream school," said Wanyonyi.
The student has a dream of becoming an engineer in future and hopes, as things stand, that only one of his kidneys can keep his dream alive.
