Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has expressed deep shock to claims that members of the Kenya Navy was rehearsing for Mashujaa Day celebrations as recovery efforts were ongoing at the Likoni Ferry Crossing instead of moving in to help.
Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, the governing Jubilee legislator said the split-screen scenario showed that something was fundamentally wrong with the society.
"A few metres away from there, the navy, the military are practicing, you know, the divers are practising how they will do a showcase during the next national celebrations. Something fundamentally wrong with us and how we actually treat Kenyans, " the Nairobi senator said. (0:30-0:50)
Johnson Sakaja decried the slow response that had been mounted by the government to the incident that has left the Kenyan public reeling in shock and anger.
The recovery efforts were embarked upon more than 48 hours after the vehicle at the Likoni Ferry Crossing sunk.
There have been calls for action to be taken against the officials at the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) over the incident.
Claims have been bandied around that Kenya Navy officers were just metres away from the scene of the tragedy yet they were not called upon to help with the recovery efforts.
