Outspoken Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu insists that the Kieleweke faction of Jubilee is not rallying for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Mt Kenya region.
The team, who is believed to be allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been supporting the Handshake between the head of state and Mr Odinga.
Instead, Ngunjiri argues, the Kieleweke team is fighting to ensure President Uhuru Kenyatta leaves behind a good legacy ahead of his retirement.
For months now, the team has openly clashed with Tanga Tanga brigade, another Jubilee faction which supports Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 bid.
"Kieleweke is not selling Raila in Mt Kenya. We cannot do that," wrote Ngunjiri, a close ally of Uhuru and an unapologetic critic of Dr Ruto.
"Kieleweke is about ensuring Uhuru gets the space and time he requires to complete his term and deliver his legacy. Period," he added.
But the first time legislator did not rule out supporting Mr Odinga, who has been working with Uhuru closely. He however maintained that Uhuru will have the final say.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has not hidden his frustrations against the Tanga Tanga brigade, and in June, he openly reprimanded MPs from his Mt Kenya region, promising to crush the rebels.
He called the defiant leaders mikora, the pejorative Kiswahili word for “crooks”, saying they had failed to support him in his unity mission, which aims to leave “a stable and unified country and to end tribal ethnicity”.
While Odinga is yet to declare his intentions to run for Presidency in 2022, the former PM has been hosting several delegations at his Capitol Hill offices, an indication that he's still interested.
