Police in Taita Taveta county are investigating an incident where a woman was on Wednesday arrested while attempting to smuggle drugs into the Manyani Maximum Security Prison .
The woman who has been identified as Mary Wairimu was discovered by security prison warders at the prison gate while trying to smuggle sachets of heroin into the facility.
The drug was reportedly found concealed inside a hollowed bar of soap she was trying to take to an inmate, according to Voi Sub County Ward Commander Bernstein Shali.
He said on cutting the bar into two, eight miniscule sachets of the drug were found, resulting in the arrest of the woman.
Officer in charge of the facility Bison Madengwa said that a chemical analysis will be done on the drug, with the facility now becoming notorious for such cases.
In August, two warders were arrested while trying to smuggle cocaine to the inmates, which has resulted in frequent searches which have seen phones, drugs and other illegal goods recovered.
Consequently, some inmates are suffering from acute withdrawal symptoms owing to the sudden disruption of the drug supply in the facility.
