Emerging details indicate that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko engineered Abdi Guyo's ouster as the Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader in a retaliatory move.
It emerges that the county boss had caught wind of information that Guyo was plotting to have him impeached after his departure to Copenhagen in Denmark.
However, Sonko is said to have plotted a counter coup, which involved bringing back ousted County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi whose exit had been engineered by Guyo.
The result of Elachi's return was clashes and vandalism in her offices, after which she officially took over after MCAs allied to her banished Guyo's allies and hired youths.
The People Daily reports that the impeachment plot was hatched two weeks ago, but now seems to have been foiled after Maringo MCA Hamza Ndungu was picked to replace Guyo.
In a letter before his departure to Copenhagen, Sonko accused Guyo of undermining his government and interfering with the staff, which he says has made it hard for him to operate.
“It has come to the attention of the Nairobi County government, that the majority leader of our ruling party, Abdi Guyo has been undermining the county government through intimidation, interference and cajoling of staff. This has made it difficult for me to implement the Jubilee manifesto and focusing on the Big Four agenda," reads the letter.
However, in a press conference at a city hotel on Thursday, Guyo who was accompanied by 36 MCAs claimed to still be the Majority Leader, claiming to enjoy the baking of 56 ward reps.
