The Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) union has finally issued a statement on the teacher who allegedly ridiculed a student to the point that she committed suicide.
The union has said that the teacher, Ms Jenifer Mutai is innocent, adding that her suspension should be lifted with immediate effect because she did nothing wrong.
Kuppet insisted that it was wrong for the Ministry of Education to order the teacher at Kabiangek Primary School in Konoin, Bomet, to apply for compulsory leave.
The officials of the union want the teacher back into the classroom as probe into the death of Jackline Chepng'eno gain momentum. They are Julius Korir (vice-chairman), Catherine Wambilianga (gender secretary) and Moses Nturuma (deputy secretary-general).
The teachers termed the allegations against the teacher as not only baseless but also ill-timed. They argued that the teacher had nothing to do with the death of the pupil.
“We issue a one-week ultimatum to the ministry to review this matter. The teacher should be made to resume her duties with immediate effect,” said Mr Korir, as quoted by Daily Nation.
The pupil’s mother’s account also showed that the teacher is not likely to have played a part in her death.
The demise of the pupil had elicited mixed reactions from different quarters.
