The former Manchester United forward has for long admired the game and stepped into the ring before losing to then-teammate Phil Bradley in 2015, after suffering a knockout.

Hearn says that while a good number of celebrities have declared interest in taking part, the most likely one is that of Rooney versus YouTube sensation Logan Paul.

"Loads (of celebs have spoken about taking part in a charity match). But more like people like Wayne Rooney. Wayne would love to do a charity fight. All these guys, they love boxing," he said.

He said that Rooney who is expected to join English side Derby County early next year has been joking about facing off with former centre back Rio Ferdinand.

"I said that to Wayne Rooney before, he was joking about fighting Rio [Ferdinand] before when Rio was getting into his boxing," he told Talk Sport.

He revealed that Rooney has been boxing in amateur clubs.

On the other hand, Ferdinand's attempts to launch a boxing career was thwarted when he was denied a license.

At Derby, Wayne will be taking over as a player coach.
