As the nation celebrates Mashujaa Day, Mukami has said that she has no reasons to smile when the remains of the father of her children cannot be traced.

In an interview with Standard, Mukami said that the government needs to remember her plight so that the man can rest in peace.

Kimathi, who was a spiritual leader and senior military of the Mau Mau Uprising was executed in the 1957 after he took part in endless wars with the British while urging them to give Kenyans freedom.

“My wish is that the government finds the remains of my husband who I believe was buried at Kamiti Maximum Prison. I want him given a decent burial. This is the only way my heart will be at peace,” she said, as quoted by Standard.

She also said that the freedom fighter need to be respected because the country could not have gained independence without them.

“If it were not for him and other freedom fighters, Kenya would not be where it is now. It would only be fair to give him a decent burial,” said Mukami.

She also asked the government to give land to the families of the freedom fighters so that they can also celebrate the Mashujaa day.
