The incident has caused panic among residents of Mbuyu Sub-Location, Gwa Kung’u in Nyandarua County after water found its way into the land.

Lawyer Kipkorir now wants Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture Mwangi Kiunjiri arrested and charged after the bursting of the banks of the water pan. He has faulted the CS over the faulty project, saying that the people feel conned.

He noted that the project has been a threat to the lives of the residents of the area and wants an action taken with immediate effect to contain the same.

“This is Kshs. 100m Dam In Karai, Nyandarua by National Irrigation Board & commissioned by Minister Mwangi Kiunjuri ... Why Kiunjuri hasn’t been arrested for ghost irrigation schemes, Fake maize imports, Fake dams etc is a mystery .. And also NIB CEO Gitonga Mugambi. Kenya WEEPS!” he tweeted.

The 100,000 cubic metres Gwa Kung’u Karai was constructed by the National Irrigation Board (NIB). The residents and different groups have asked the government to intervene in the matter with immediate effect to protect the lives of the residents of the area.

NIB's Head of Corporate Communication Daniel M Nzonzo said that the pan is yet to be completed. He also said that it will cost the government sh.19 million before it is complete.

“The work is not yet complete and the contractor is still on site. NIB has not yet paid the contractor any money and therefore the effects the damage caused by the excess water will be done under the existing contract,” said Mr Nzonzo.
