According to some of their neighbours interviewed by Hivisasa, the couple has been struggling to make ends meet and that may be the main reason to why they decided to sell their eight-year-old child to an unknown family from Kisii County.

“The mother of the child told me that they had successfully sold their eight years son to a family that hails from Kisii County and that move touched hence I informed the police who have started the investigations," said Jemimah Ongaki a neighbour

Nyamira region Children officer Clair Nyangweso said the matter has already been reported and it is now been handled by the police.

“We thank the neighbours of the family for reporting the matter to us and we have already started working with the police to ensure that the couple is arrested as the law doesn’t allow anyone to sell his/her child in exchange of money,” said Nyangweso.

Area Chief Kennedy Onchwari said the incident has been reported to Nyamira police and the hunt of the duo has begun.

Onchwari said it was saddening to see a couple sell their own child noting that they are working to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted.

The chief asked locals to help police in the search for the couple who is now at large.
