A Mombasa court has acquitted seven people suspected to be members of the outlawed group, Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).
The seven were arraigned to answer to charges of allegedly being members of an organized criminal group.
The seven accused persons are Randu Nzai Ruwa, Mohammed Rashid, Omar Suleiman, Nyae Ngao, Robert Charo, Salim Ali, Salim Hamisi.
MRC chairman Omar Hamisi Mwamnuadzi was also facing similar charges but was still at large during the case hearing.
Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia in his ruling ordered that the seven be released saying the prosecution had failed to prove its case.
Magistrate Kyambia said the prosecution failed to provide evidence that MRC is an unlawful group dealing with criminal activities.
The prosecution had also failed to provide enough witnesses to testify in the case which made the trial to drag for seven years in court.
The prosecution managed to avail two witnesses and magistrate Kyambia said the witnesses failed to give any evidence to show that the group is an illegal criminal group.
“Coupled with insufficient evidence by the prosecution, the declaration by the Court of Appeal that MRC is not an organised criminal group, I find that the prosecution has not made out a prima facie case to warrant placing the accused persons on their defense,” ruled the magistrate.
