Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has termed claims that he is backing Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 bid as baseless.
On Wednesday morning, different media houses claimed that Muthama had declared his support for the DP come 2022.
Citizen was first to tweet about the claim, adding that Muthama was resuming his political career after taking a break in 2017 general elections.
"Ex-Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama says DP William Ruto best suited to lead the country in 2022, announces political comeback in the next general election. http://citizentv.co.ke," Citizen had tweeted.
However, in an interview with Kenyans,a local digital publisher, Muthama said the claims were baseless and that he has never taken a break from politics.
"Those are baseless reports and I will not be dragged into denying nor confirming as I never uttered such remarks.
"They are generated from the author's own perspective. I am not out of politics. I never lost and I will continue being there. The only thing I said was that I would not stand in the 2017 elections and that's what I did," Muthama argued as quoted by Kenyans.co.ke.
The claims had already marked a celebration amongst those supporting DP Ruto's 2022 bid, with former MP Boni Khalwale taking it to Twitter to celebrate Muthama for his stand.
"Pap! The wheel has now turned full cycle. @nduyamuthama it is, and before him was @DavidNdii who was preceded by Dr Boni Khalwale. Three men who were right at the heart of the NASA nerve center in 2017. Lisemwalo lipo, na ka halipo, linjiani laja!," Khalwale retweeted Citizen's tweet.
