Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has lauded the progress made in fighting gambling in the country.
Speaking when he met Muslim leaders at Jamia Mosque on Monday, the CS stated that despite numerous challenges, betting firms and gambling machines will be faced out in the long run.
He asked all Kenyans to fight betting.
“Data shows since we started a crackdown on gambling, change has been seen. It has not been a bed of roses but I am resolute in stopping it. No country has been built by gambling. This must be fought by every Kenyan,” said Matiang’i as quoted by Citizen Digital.
His tough directives against betting firms and businessmen have seen several entities close business in Kenya.
Betting giants SportPesa and Betin Kenya halted their operations in the country stating that the business environment had become unfriendly.
They opposed increased taxation that affected the companies as well as their clients who were to be taxed 20 per cent of their winnings.
"Until such time that adequate taxation and non-hostile regulatory environment is returned, the SportPesa brand will halt operations in Kenya," read SportPesa's statement.
Several gambling machines have also been destroyed across the nation under CS Mating'i's orders.
The CS believes gambling is killing Kenyan future by promoting laziness among the young generation.
