A directive from the office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has barred police officers from escorting officials from the Collective Management Organizations’ (CMOs) while on their duties.
According to a report by eDaily, the instruction was given following a letter from the office of the Inspector General on the subject.
"The Director, of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, has directed that from the date of this letter, this directive should take effect immediately, that no police officer is authorized to accompany any Music Copy-right staff while performing their operations,” the letter read as quoted by the eDaily.
The move by the DCI comes shortly after allegations emerged that some of the officials from the CMOs with the help of the police were harassing business owners and matatu operators who had not paid royalties.
The Chief Executive Officer of MCSK Milka Kulati nonetheless dismissed the allegations and instead accused only a group of officials from the society of being behind the alleged embarrassments which damaged the image of MCSK.
It should be noted that only a few weeks ago a number of Kenyan musicians took to social media to launch complaints against MCSK for being underpaid.
Some of the artistes including Khaligraph and Willy Paul went ahead to state that no one should be harassed by MCSK for playing their songs.
