President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday made an impromptu visit to Naivasha where he inspected the ongoing construction of Dry Port, State House revealed.
The President was making his way to Nairobi after attending a graduation ceremony at Kibabii University, several miles away in Western Kenya.
Naivasha Dry Port has been under construction for months now. It will be a major focal point for business given that it will link the Standard Gauge Railway with the Western part of the country.
State House said: "President Uhuru Kenyatta today made an impromptu visit to Naivasha dry port to inspect the ongoing works. The facility is a key enabler of regional economic growth within East and Central Africa."
SGR construction is still underway. Recently Uhuru launched the Suswa terminus, not far away from Naivasha, a town within Rift Valley region.
In April, President Uhuru Kenyatta gifted his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni a piece of land in Naivasha for Dry Port construction.
"We also look forward to partnering on other projects with our Kenyan brothers. For example, they have offered us land to build a dry port at Naivasha. The SGR is a project we are partnering on,” President Museveni said.
Uhuru has earmarked SGR as one of his mega projects. However, the Naivasha-Kisumu SGR construction would delay due to limited funding.
“The SGR train had evidently improved transport of cargo from Mombasa to Nairobi and I am now keen on the joint development of the SGR line to Kampala in Uganda,” President Uhuru said.
