The head of state commended Ahmed for his fight for peace in his country and the neighbouring countries.

"I am delighted for my brother Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the People of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Award. Prime Minister Ahmed fully deserves the recognition,'' said Uhuru in a statement.

"Prime Minister Ahmed stands out as a relentless champion for peace, stability and prosperity of his country, our region and the entire African continent," he added.

The Ethiopia PM was awarded the prestigious award for his efforts in championing for peace

He was appointed as Ethiopia Prime Minister in 2018 and was picked for the Noble Price after he ended the war that has been on for two decades between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea.

Ahmed signed a peace deal with Eritrea which ended their military standoff of a long time.

He also brought peace within his country among different communities after he released all opposition activists who had been jailed by the previous regime.

The PM further allowed all citizens who had been exiled back into the country.

He becomes the 100th person to win the Noble Peace Price all over the world. In Africa, he becomes the 24th person to win the award.
