The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) closed Daraja Mbili slaughterhouse in Kisii county on Friday due to lack of proper drainage patterns at the facility, it has emerged.
NEMA official Robert Orina said they arrived at the decision to close down the facility due to the bad smell emanating from the slaughterhouse.
"The state of the slaughterhouse is dirty and this forced us to close down the facility. There are no drainage patterns to ensure free flow of water. The slaughterhouse has also been channeling dirty water to the river thus putting the lives of locals risk of contracting diseases such as cholera," said Orina as reported by Egesa Fm.
The NEMA official also warned that anyone found slaughtering cattle at the facility will be arrested and be arraigned in court and be fined Sh2 million.
He further said Itibo slaughterhouse in Bonchari Sub County was also closed down.
"Renovation must be done at Daraja Mbili and Itibo slaughterhouses before work resumes at the facilities. Proper drainage patterns must be constructed at the facilities and ensure no dirty water is released to rivers before the facilities will be re-opened," Orina insisted.
The official assured that NEMA will not allow the lives of innocent people to be put at risk.
