The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has said that he will be part of the upcoming Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) meetings.
Flanked by politicians allied to Deputy President Dr William Ruto, the Senate majority leader confirmed that he would attend alongside other leaders the next meeting to be held in the port city of Mombasa.
''We will be participating in all public BBI rallies across the country and this weekend we will be in Mombasa together with the BBI team, '' the Elgeyo Marakwet legislator told members of the press.
The position by the politicians allied to DP Ruto is a significant reversal from their earlier positions.
They had disparaged the BBI meetings as political meetings aimed at securing the political interests of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and his long-time political adversary President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The question is what made the deputy president allies to change their position on the BBI meetings.
Opposing the BBI meetings, which allegedly have the blessings of the president, would feed the perception that the DP and his allies are fighting Uhuru Kenyatta, a perception which would cost them politically.
The BBI meetings have been framed by their conveners as meetings aimed at bringing together and identifying solutions to the problems facing the country.
Expressing the meetings would be taken to mean that they are against that agenda, hence giving their political adversaries ammunition with which to attack them.
Most importantly, being part of the BBI meetings gives them the opportunity to shape the conversation while being part of it instead of being outside it.
This puts them in a better position to ensure that their views are captured in the final document.
