There was alarm in Nakuru's Rongai area on Saturday, after a borehole that was being drilled exploded, sending out a furious fire geyser made of natural gas and water.
The workers were working at the Patel Coffee Estate, where experts from the geological department have since been invited to investigate the type of gas that came out.
The incident was confirmed by Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu, who said that the scene was immediately condoned off by police officers to prevent injuries.
"The farm management was drilling a borehole in search of water but what came out was gas in the form of fire. We have cordoned the scene to avert any disaster," he said.
He added that the incident is suspected to be a result of the volcanic history of the region, which is close to Lake Bogoria and Menengai Crater.
The police boss assured locals of their safety, adding that experts are assessing the safety of the borehole and whether the drilling can continue.
"Geologists will, however, assess the site to ascertain if the borehole is safe for further use," he said.
Witnesses said workers on site immediately took off after the fire, which was shooting about 4 metres off the ground emerged, as the farm administration alerted the police.
