Islamic African nations have been forming realignments especially towards the Middle East, something which Mr Maalim considers valueless.

According to the former MP, the countries should not align themselves towards Iran or gulf countries, adding that they should Africanise their economy.

"Nyerere once said that Tanzanians shall neither go East (communism) nor West (capitalism) but forward," said Mr Maalim.

"African Muslims don't need to be Pro Gulf Arabs or Pro Iranians but Pro African, Pro Development of their Citizenry& Pro Islam. Sub Saharan Africa with its complexity needs us," he added in a tweet on Tuesday.

Gulf nations among them Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have been scrambling for the control of Islamic nations in Africa especially at the Horn of Africa.

On the other hand, Iran, whose leadership subscribes to Shiite ideologies, is also trying to penetrate the African nations.

For instance, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are embroiled in a diplomatic row over the influence in Somalia, whose government is battling Al-Shabaab threat.

Mr Maalim, a former Lagdera MP, usually writes and lectures on diplomatic matters within the Horn of Africa.
